1-Year-Old Skills

2-Year-Old Skills

Speak 1- and 2-word utterances (like “ball” or “throw ball”)
Ask some “wh-” questions, like “what?”, “what that?”, or “where mommy?”
Follow simple directions, especially with a gestural cue
Imitate adult behaviors in play
Point to familiar objects in books when named and name some himself/herself
Use simple directional/spatial terms, such as “up” and “down”
Say 200-300 words (but you don’t have to count them all!)

3-Year-Old Skills

Speak clearly enough to be understood about 75% of the time
Use some pronouns (such as “I”, “it”, “me”, “my”, “mine”, “you”, “your”, “she”, “he”, “yours”, and “we”)
Use the “-ing” at the end of verbs (such as “running” and “jumping”)
Begin to use plural “s” (like “socks”)
Use past tense “-ed”
Use the possessive ‘s like “Mommy’s ball”
Produce sentences that are an average length of 3 words
Use more descriptive words and spatial concepts
Answer questions such as, “where…?”, “what’s that”, “what’s ___ doing”, “who is…”, and “can you…”
Ask simple “where”, “what”, and “what doing” questions
Follow simple two-step directions, such as “get your cup and give it to me”

Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS)

Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) is a motor speech disorder where children have difficulty producing many sounds to form words. To learn more about helping a child with CAS, click here.

Language Delay/Disorder

Language skills include our ability to use words to create sentences and to communicate with others. There are many different types of language delays and disorders. To learn about the different types of language problems, click the links below:

Receptive Language Delay/Disorder: When the child has trouble understanding language that is being spoken to him (or presented in written form)
Expressive Language Delay/Disorder: When the child has trouble using language skills to speak and write
Vocabulary Delay: When the child doesn’t know what words mean or doesn’t know what things are called
Syntax/Grammar Delay/Disorder: When the child struggles to understand or use grammatically correct sentences
Delays with Questions: When the child struggles to ask or answer questions appropriately

Late Talkers

According to the Hanen Centre Website, a late talker is defined as a child that is 18-30 months of age who seems to understand language well but does not talk or say words as much as is expected for a child that age. Late talkers are typically developing well in other areas such as play skills, motor skills, thinking skills, etc.

Non-Speaking Children

There are many reasons that a child may not be speaking. When a child is not able to speak, we can help find alternative means for that child to communicate or we can teach them words one by one so that they have some means of functional communication.

Phonological Delay/Disorder

Children with a phonological delay or disorder have trouble saying entire classes of sounds. For example, they may replace all back sounds (like /k/ and /g/) with front sounds (like /t/ and /d/). Or they may replace all long sounds (like /s/, /z/, and /f/) with short sounds (like /t/, /d/, and /p/). We can help these children learn to speak correctly by replacing these sound substitution rules with the correct sounds.

Sensory Processing Disorder

Social Communication Impairment

Children with social communication impairment have difficulty with the social skills required to interact with others. There are many different types of social communication problems that might be present. To see all of our resources on helping children with social communication, click here!

Speech (Articulation) Delay/Disorder

Children with articulation delays or disorders have difficulty saying specific speech sounds. They may lisp on their /s/ and /z/ sounds. Or they may use a /w/ instead of an /r/. Stuttering and Cluttering

Children who stutter have trouble with speaking smoothly and fluently. They may repeat sounds, syllables, or whole words multiple times before moving on to the rest of what they want to say. Selective Mutism

Selective mutism is a diagnosis that describes a child who does not speak in certain situations where speech is expected (such as at school or in public) but is able to speak normally in at least one other setting (such as at home). To see all of our resources on selective mutism, click here

Voice and resonance disorders involve the quality of the child’s voice and speech. Harsh, raspy, breathy, nasal, or hoarse voice quality can be the sign of a problem.

But the daily maintenance needed to keep a place tidy isn’t novel or challenging enough so I tend to procrastinate on those tasks that would help keep me there.
